MHAMID, GATEWAY TO THE DESERT.
Mhamid is a small village located in the Sahara Desert region, in Zagora, southern Morocco. It is one of the two main gateways to the Sahara in Morocco (along with Merzouga). Mhamid is undoubtedly the most “authentic” part of the Sahara Desert and an ideal starting point for a genuine desert experience.
Located just 7–8 hours by road from Marrakech and 5 hours from Ouarzazate, Mhamid was originally called Taragalte. Once a prosperous village inhabited by a mix of local Berber tribes, including the Drawa, Chorfa, Beni Mhamed, and Hassani, its original site, Mhamid Bali, is now an ancient kasbah located 2 km from the main road. It was later settled many years ago by Black Africans from Sudan.
